6 Common Dental Problems And Their Treatments

Fresh breath boosts confidence for everyone, but do you know that many adults suffer from halitosis aka bad breath besides other common dental health issues? Let us take a quick look at 6 such common dental problems and their treatments.

1. Gum Diseases like Gingivitis and Periodontitis

Gingivitis is a mild form of gum disease. It is caused by the buildup of plaque as a result of poor brushing and flossing habits. Crooked teeth, smoking, pregnancy, and diabetes are other risk factors.  A thorough professional dental cleaning is the only treatment, in addition to brushing and flossing twice a day.

Gingivitis is usually painless, due to which it generally goes unnoticed. Routine dental exams are recommended for early diagnosis and treatment and if left untreated, it can lead to Periodontitis where the pockets within the tooth can get infected. This may result in the deterioration of the tissues and bones that support your teeth. Treatments include topical antibiotics and possible referral to a periodontist who is a gum disease specialist.

2. Tooth Decay

Also known as dental cavities or dental caries, it is a common oral problem. Bacteria form a film on the surface of teeth – called plaque. The bacteria transform sugars from food into acid which eats away the tooth enamel and the dentin layer beneath it, resulting in cavities or holes. This may result in tooth pain, black or brown spots on your teeth, and unpleasant taste in the mouth.

Dental care begins by assessing the nature and extent of tooth decay. Treatments involve crowns, fillings, or root canal procedures. Extraction followed by dental implants may also be an option.

3. Receding Gums

This condition exposes the root of the tooth which is delicate and susceptible to damage. It can be caused by a variety of factors such as

  • Smoking
  • High blood pressure
  • Poor Oral Hygiene
  • Brushing teeth with excessive force

Your receding gums can be hereditary, meaning it is genetic. For treatment, your dentist will examine your teeth thoroughly and show you the best brushing techniques to prevent receding gums. Severe cases may require a gum graft or other surgical procedures, for which we will refer you to dental specialists who are experts in the specific treatment.

4. Dry Mouth

It is a typical oral health issue among elderly individuals. It is caused by various medical conditions including cancer treatment, nerve damage, salivary gland problems, and diabetes. You can relieve dry mouth and dry throat conditions by sipping water throughout the day. You should also avoid substances such as alcohol, tobacco and caffeine which are known for increasing dry mouth effects.

5. Sensitive Teeth

This is caused by the wearing out of the enamel which leaves the dentin exposed. Hot and cold fluids travel through dentin tubes to the nerves lying deep within the tooth, causing intense pain and discomfort. Among other things, gum diseases, root infections, and receding gums can cause sensitive teeth.

There are toothpaste and mouthwashes made specifically for individuals with sensitive teeth. Your dentist may also suggest a crown, gum graft, or root canal, depending on the severity of your case.

6. Root Infection

Cavities, cracks, or fractures in the tooth can cause the tissue around the root of your tooth to be swollen and infected with bacteria. Chronic pain and problem while biting and chewing are sure signs of an infection. In some cases, one can notice swelling of the face around the area of infection. Root canal treatment is a possible cure;  typically a safe process, done using anaesthetics and causing minimal pain.
